Is it important to promote your work?

Short answer
No, but it’s lots of fun!

Long answer
The wheel as an invention and the discovery of fire didn’t exactly cath on account of global marketing campaigns. Rather, it was the nature of their functionality that made them indispensable and popular inventions. Do something worthwhile and word will get out, with or without promotion. Still, marketing and the media can be enjoyable materials to work with, often with grand reactions as a consequences of you work, which can produce further platforms to explore. However, then the “promotion” becomes an end in itself.
