At this point I’ve hit most of the Brookfield empire, but I think it’s important to write about what interests you, and not just what you think others want to read about. This week I’ve been looking at Brookfield Renewables (BEP-NYSE, BEP.UN-TSX) a little more closely so I thought I’d share a little bit on what the company is all about.

What is Brookfield Renewable Partners?

Brookfield Renewable is a business arm of the larger Brookfield (BN) Corporation. It is a standalone business, but has the backing of the much larger Brookfield corp. Brookfield Renewable’s business is in generating, storing, and distributing energy from low carbon and renewable sources. They’ve been doing this for a long time — the company as we know it today has been around since about 2011, but Brookfield Corporation has been investing and operating energy companies in various shapes and forms since their beginnings in 1890s operating hydroelectric assets and installing the first electrical lights and tramways in Brazil.

Having a long history of renewable energy experience actually gives Brookfield quite the advantage. They have historically been a larger owner of hydroelectric assets (think dams that produce energy), which is becoming nearly impossible to build more of due to environmental impact reasons. That…
