Amazon India takes a step forward in order to give the government’s Make In India initiative a push by unveiling its manufacturing plans in the country.

Make In India push

As a move to commit its partnership with the Indian government to advance the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Amazon India has announced its first device manufacturing line in India. The company said it will contribute to the ‘Make In India’ initiative by boosting Indian innovation in manufacturing and drive economic growth and create jobs. This will be the first Amazon manufacturing line in India.

When and where? Amazon will commence its manufacturing efforts with contract manufacturer Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Foxconn in Chennai, and start production later this year. Tamil Nadu has been an essential partner for Amazon India & we are excited to launch our 1st manufacturing line in Chennai. This contributes directly to the local economy & showcases India’s ability to produce world-class products, the company added.

‘The company has pledged to invest $1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling $10 billion in cumulative exports, and create an additional 1MM jobs by 2025’, Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Leader for Amazon India said.

Fire TV Stick for starters

The company’s first manufacturing line in India will focus on Fire TV Stick in which it will produce hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Stick devices every year catering to the demands of the Indian customers.

What is Amazon Fire TV Stick? It is a media streaming device that lets you stream video, install apps, play music on smart TVs. There are many free channels provided with the device.

Amazon was largely sourcing its Fire TV Stick from China and Taiwan for the Indian market. But now the company has chosen the country itself to produce the device to meet the demand instead of sourcing it. The company may also start manufacturing other devices too based on the local demand.

For the local

The government’s recently introduced production-linked initiative (PLIs) for various electronic devices may have also worked in the favour of the country to shift Amazon’s manufacturing focus from China to India. This move will act as an accelerator to create jobs and contribute to the country’s local economy and showcase India’s ability to produce global products.

Appreciating the move, minister for communications, electronics, and information, Ravi Shankar Prasad in a statement said — ‘We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well.’
