MF Data Snapshot: Equity inflows dip for the second month; SIPs at ₹8,123 crore

The equity schemes inflows declined for the second straight month in May while the debt-oriented and hybrid schemes inflows surged for the month. The mutual fund industry overall recorded a net inflow of nearly ₹ 70,813.4 crore across all segments as compared to a net inflow of ₹46,000 crore in April.

The assets under management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry jumped to ₹24.54 lakh crore in May-end from ₹23.93 lakh crore recorded in April-end.

As per data by the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI), the growth and equity-oriented schemes net inflow for the month of May 2020 plunged ₹ 5,256.5 crore against ₹6,212.9 crore a month ago. The tax saving Equity-linked savings scheme (ELSS) contribution was almost flat at ₹712 crore during the month, from ₹752 crore in April.

Multi cap and large cap funds under equity scheme witnessed an inflow in May 2020 of ₹1,240 crore and ₹1,691 respectively.

The chart below shows the equity inflows of three months i.e., March (₹11,722 crore), April (₹6,212.9 crore) and May (₹5,256.2 crore). The inflow trend continued for equities, however, the inflows declined 15% in April.

The income and debt-oriented schemes garnered total net inflows of 63,665.5 crore in May against ₹43,431.5 crore inflow in April. Liquid fund supported the debt funds as it witnessed net inflow of ₹61,870.8 crore during the month in review versus ₹68,848 month-on-month (MoM).

Overnight fund’s outflows stood at ₹-15,881 crore. Credit Risk fund saw outflows of ₹5,173 crore, better than the previous month’s outflow figure.

Coming to the Hybrid schemes (mix of equity and debt), the scheme’s inflow doubled in May to ₹8,652 crore from April’s inflow of ₹4,204.7 crore.

After registering the inflows of ₹731 crore in April, Gold exchange-traded funds (ETF) continued the inflows trend with ₹815 crore inflows in May.

The chart depicts the total contribution made by systematic investment plans (SIPs) in the last six months. In May 2020, the SIP inflows plunged a bit to ₹8,123 crore as compared to ₹8,376 crore in April.

The total number of SIP folios/accounts are at 3.16 crore currently via which investors regularly invest in the mutual fund schemes.
