Am I capable or flashy enough to pull it off ? Will I be able to speak in public ? What if I am struck ? What if I fumble in front of my team as their founding president ?
Questions like these kept darting through my mind as I boarded the Delhi metro back to my Varsity from Gurgaon. I was at Gurgaon for a purpose ,to attend my first Toastmasters session . Fortunately my brother has been a Toastmaster Member for 8 months now and agreed to take me to his club — The SOIL TOASTMASTERS CHAPTER, Gurgaon.
The very next day I proposed my Culrural Secretay to start the. — SNU CHAPTER of TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL.
The people who dont know about Toastmasters , or the one who want to know more, here’s my two cents –
To,
The Cultural Secretary (Shiv Nadar University 2017–2018).
Dear Shanjana,
MY PROPOSAL
Its with great enthusiasm that I put forward this proposal of starting the club that I have been a part of and have found immensely enriching for my personal growth.
I hereby propose to start the –
SNU CHAPTER of TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL.
I propose and strongly aspire to set-up a truly democratic and diverse founding team of the club with the right mix of juniors ,seniors and even faculties .
Adhering to the guidelines of Toastmasters , I also intend to hold 6 monthly internal club elections for the 7 officer posts and keep regulating it this way.
Having known the Divisional Club Growth Director of North and North-East India for a long while now , I am pleased to have him share the same enthusiasm as mine to initiate this club under the umbrella of Division 41 of TI at SNU for which he is also willing to come down to SNU with his team to give a demo of how a Toastmaster’s session is conducted. The gentleman also offers to mentor for the initial setting up phase of the club .

WHY THIS CLUB ?
Among a lot of life skills necessary for an individual to thrive in his life , public speaking and leadership are the two most important requisite for acing past any given circumstances.
Whether you are a student trying to –
- Socialize with peers/seniors
- Start a club
- Facing interviews or
somebody like me bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and trying to start your own thing , people skills lie at the helm of the scheme of things to do any of the above.
Having already been established at India’s premier institutes like IIM’s, IIT’s etc , let alone all the Ivy-Leagues and British schools, Toastmasters has several chapters established in countless true blue corporate organizations in India and abroad. Being part of it makes you participate in inter club events leading to a world public speaking championship .
This enhances the networking/placement opportunity of our students and improves/sustains the overall standard and reputation of our university.
Beneficiaries.
- Whole Student Body (UG, MBA).
- All the Faculties and Phd’s (Interested).
- Joining a Global family for once and being part of it forever , continuing later in any member institute around the world which is convenient.
- International recognition(for nourishing CV) which is a true indicator of oratory skills required in flashy sales/marketing profile , HR,PR posts and other avenues requiring mass communication skills.
TO CONCLUDE :
Having a diverse and driven student body led by high achieving seniors/cultural committee , I believe SNU has the potential to produce the most enterprising graduates and upon successful completion of above mentioned Aims and Objectives they will be ready to take on and move past any challenges confronting them.
This potential can and should be channelized effectively by participating in cost
effective training program of Toastmasters in a biweekly or bimonthly basis whilst being part of its Global Family.
Further details and forwarding of the official email and attachments of Toastmasters International authority are subject to the feedback received.
Looking forward to a positive reply !!
