Tucked away in the heart of Sengkang was a quaint little hawker which put a twist on Instant noodles by infusing a kiss of wok hei and even topping it with drool worthy ingredients.

As we approached the stall, we were greeted by the melodious clangs and bangs of a spatula hitting a wok, drowning out the hustle and bustle of the hawker center.

Behind the wok was a chef with many years of experience working in “zhi char” restaurants perspiring profusely as he executed a series of quick but yet precise flicks.

These sent both noodles and ingredients flying high into the air just beyond the reach of the hungry flames below occasionally imparting a kiss of wok hei.

XO Curly Mee (SGD 7.30)

They offer a variety of flavours with varying levels of spiciness from Mala and Tom Yam which really bring the heat, to the milder options such as the XO or specialty.

Tom Yum Curly Mee (SGD 7)

Each choice of noodle has the option to add on sides such as chicken or pork cutlets, shrimp, crab meat, tobiko or a sunny side up.

Tom Yum Curly Mee (SGD 7)

We opted for the “Must Try” Tom Yum Curly Mee (SGD 7)topped with an unctuous pork cutlet which arrived sliced into strips and the XO Curly Mee topped with a juicy chicken cutlet with a drizzle of freshly ground black pepper(SGD 7.30).

The meal, brought us back to our university days where we would stay up late stressing over preparations for an exam the next day with our only comfort being a piping hot plate of fried instant noodles which mom would whip up and silently place beside us.

It truly was a nostalgic meal at very reasonable prices deep within the heartlands of Singapore.
