GUIMARAES
TRANSPORTATION:
The ride by car from Porto to Guimaraes takes about 1–1.5h.
By train: trains depart from the station San Bentu, the train ride is about 1 hour and 15 mins, round trip cost 7.5 euro.
SIGHTSEEING & FACTS:
Guimaraes is considered the birthplace of Portugal because Portugal’s first King, Afonso Henriques, was born there, and also due to the fact that the Battle of São Mamede — which is considered the seminal event for the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal — was fought in the vicinity of the city.
Largo Republica do Brazil is the main square with gorgeous Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolacao e Santos Passos on one end and old town on the other end
The old town is surrounded by N101 route and has a beautiful Largo da Oliveira square hidden inside the town.
Guimaraes Castle — founded in 1000s this castle is the main birthplace of Portugal. Tickets: ~2euro.
Teleferico — mountain cable car to the Penha. VERY MUCH RECOMMEND! Beautiful park, beautiful view. Cable car closes around 8pm. Costs around 12 euro. You can also drive there.

- Sangria at the Café Coconuts in Old Town
- Sunset at the Varanda dos Namorados with a view of the Guimaraes valley. Great place for a sunset picnic with a glass of wine.
