Refreshed from the cool water spring, our hero breathes a sigh of satisfaction. Everything is still and calm inside the cave, except the faint trickling of spring water.

True to its namesake, the Caves of Despair are dark, limitless voids of rock passages winding through the earth. The hero stands, taking in the darkness before them. Where is this, how did I get here, and more importantly — how do I get out? Questions begin to crowd the hero’s mind as a feeling of stiffness overtakes their unused muscles.

A whisper in from the void answers, “It’s too far to the exit, you’ll never make it out.”

It’s Apathia, the motivation-draining ghost!

Though our hero may be weary from their recent rebirth, the cool spring’s energy flowing through them can purify much of the spirit’s influence. Concentrating, the Hero purged the numbness trying to creep in. All it takes is a stretch here and a twist there.

Apathia wails and shrinks back into the far wall, leaving our adventurer to continue their quest.

Everyone Can Exorcise Apathia

One of my biggest enemies is a lack of motivation — which, a quick antonym search reveals is the opposite of apathy. And so an enemy is born in the Adventuresphere!

Early in a new adventure, Apathia is much weaker because of the excitement of hopes and goals waiting to be fulfilled; likewise, taking a few minutes each morning to stretch can help start the day off more easily than waiting until hours later.

That being said, it’s sometimes harder said than done!

For now, our hero is riding the excitement of a new beginning. After a few days, weeks, or months, that excitement wears off. Apathia will be back — and be even stronger.

That’s why we’ve got to do what we can here and now to level ourselves up to ensure our hero’s success later in the journey.
