Introduction of Dr. Jenson Chi

Medical students are in need of a curriculum which enables them to build unique capabilities: to think and react independently so that they can agilely adapt to the ever-changing healthcare environment.

Three critical questions to answer in IFMSA General Assembly 2019:

1.What kind of technology associated with healthcare is present on the market now?

We apply Stanford methodologies and gather trans-disciplinary talent together to brainstorm and solve critical problems in healthcare, so that innovative conversation and collaboration become possible and powerful when we apply new technology to our healthcare ecosystem.

Proposed Activity for “Technology X Medicine”

1.Workshop: Design Future Healthcare — design the best way how technology meets healthcare.

Related activity: NTD workshop

2.Workshop: Teamwork in Healthcare — leverage technology to build your multi-disciplinary team.

Related activity: H. Spectrum BioMed Startup Program

3.Fireside Chat or Speech: When technology meets healthcare.

Related activity: Moodwide Life Design Salon

Our experiences — Why we propose it

Dr. Chi consults for several companies and health care organizations in recent years, which enables Dr. Chi to understand the dynamic ecosystem of global healthcare thoroughly. Below are important collaborations and projects that are pertinent to the above question:

  • Consulting physician for HIWIN Technologies Corp (2049:Taiwan Stock Exchange): As one of the most promising and leading companies in technology ecosystems in Taiwan, HIWIN is devoted to providing intelligent and automatic medical services in response to higher demand for medical care and insufficient medical practitioners. In 2019, Dr. Chi consults for R&D team in HIWIN to facilitate the collaboration between technology and medicine.

2. How can technology be integrated into medical education and medical research?

In our innovative activities in medical schools, we encourage medical students to explore the world “outside healthcare” and allow them to make tons of mistakes. In this way, they learn so fast from failures and thereby build the ability to face uncertainty and unfamiliarity in a comfortable way in the future.

Proposed Activity for “Technology-enabled medical education and research”

  1. Workshop: When Medical Students Meet Technology.

2.Fireside Chat or Speech: Our experience in introducing technology to 1st year medical students.

Our experiences — Why we propose it

With decades of experience teaching and interacting with medical students, Moodwide team is capable of understanding medical students’ perspectives towards their needs and challenges. Below are occasions where we’ve integrated technology into medical education and research:

3. Would digitalizing healthcare change the traditional doctor-patient relationship and remedy the worsening health inequality?

In this modern era of information explosion and technology boom, we help medical students to build empathy not only to the patients they encounter, but to themselves. With a thorough understanding and respect to themselves, they become empowered to make humanized decisions without hesitation.

Proposed Activity for “Better relationship and equality”

1.Workshop: Life and Career Design — for medical students in the era of technology boom.

2.Fireside Chat or Speech: Our experience in helping medical students to design their life.

Our experiences — Why we propose it

In almost every workshop we hosted, we set the topic — “EMPATHY” as our first part of conversation with our participants. By better understanding our user’s perspectives and needs, we keep ourselves on the right track along the way of solving healthcare problems.

  • In the compulsory course “digital health and artificial intelligence” in medical school, we co-create user’s journey map with medical students and patients.
  • We highly encourage medical students to understand their own needs before getting to help others. Build a great self-relationship then learn to build a great patient-doctor relationship!

Summary

  • To answer three critical questions related to our better future, we share some of our perspectives and learnings derived from our intimate interaction with medical students and trans-disciplinary talent in recent years.
  • We’ve seen and met hundreds of medical students who are in desperate need of learning and applying new technologies to better prepare themselves to the ever-changing healthcare ecosystem.
  • Besides, it is imperative to empower medical students with empathy and humanity in an innovative way especially in the world where “technology is omnipresent”.
  • We look forward to co-creating impactful and interesting activities with IFMSA leadership in General Assembly 2019!
