Because it’s always better to Expect More and Pay Less.

Although Target is considered a “discount store,” it can still take a hit on your wallet. Here are some tips and tricks on how to get the best deals when shopping at Target.

1. Plan your trip out using Cartwheel

ICYMI, Target has an awesome digital coupon app called Cartwheel. If there’s a certain product you need, check Cartwheel before you start shopping and see if its on sale. At times, Cartwheel can discount as much as 50% or more off a product!

Also good to know, most Target in-house brands (i.e. Up & Up, Archer Farms, etc.) have an additional discount available on Cartwheel.

2. Always check the Clearance, always

Target’s Clearance sections are a treasure hunt in themselves. Most of the time, you’ll find incredible deals on out-of-season, open box, returned and repackaged products.

Clearance deals vary from store to store, so if you check two separate Target locations, the deals will vary.

Also keep in mind, that products get continually discounted until they are sold. Most products are discounted 30% off from their normal price when placed on clearance. So if the deal isn’t enticing for you enough, if it doesn’t sell, there’s a good chance the price might get lower.

But remember, with clearance, sometimes if you snooze, you lose.

3. Price match it

We all know that sometimes Target can’t beat Amazon when it comes to price. But the cool thing is that Target price matches target.com, competing brick-and-mortar stores (i.e. Walmart) and other online retailers (i.e. Amazon). You can request a price match at the time of purchase or ask for a price adjustment within 14 days after purchase.

4. Use a coupon

We know, paper coupons aren’t necessarily cool to carry around. But just so you know, Target does accept one coupon per item, be a manufacturer’s or store coupon.

You usually get a few store and manufacturer’s coupons when you check out at the register. Target also runs promotions from time to time that give you sweet coupons to use in store. And if you clip manufacturer’s coupons from a newspaper or mailing, those are accepted as well.

5. Use RedCard for 5% off

Target has a store debit and credit card program, RedCard, that gives you a 5% discount whenever you buy anything in-store or at target.com. This discount can stack with the savings you get from paper coupons, price matches and Cartwheel.

However, beware when using RedCard on big purchases, like electronics. Most major credit cards normally offer a complimentary extended warranty on a big purchase. RedCard does not. Also, the Target credit card has a high interest rate at 23.15%, which can make it a tough pill to swallow if you miss a payment.

6. Wait for a sale

Like any other retailer, Target has different sales each week. Your best bet would be to check the Weekly Ad online to see what’s on sale. If it’s not on sale this week, it might be on sale next.
