Initially, most startups are self-funded and often cash-strapped and to keep the operating cost low, they sometimes, compromise on skills while hiring people. This is the biggest mistake. You should never, I mean never, compromise on skills.

You must make sure that the employees you are going to hire have the needed skills. Don’t go for the slow-learners as you might not have time or resources to train people at an initial stage. It is ok for big companies to hire such people as they have established training departments.

Also, if you hire somebody for the tasks that he/she has never done before, then they are more likely to make mistakes. And even a small mistake can severely affect your startup when you are on the verge of making a big difference.

2. Always Look for Relevant Experience

When you are hiring people, you should always look for the ones who have relevant experience.

‘Relevant experience’ implies that the individuals you are going to hire have done similar work before.

For instance, you need to hire a web copywriter to sell your products online. You should look for the one who is well-experienced in web copywriting, to sell products online. A copywriter with a considerable experience in print media might not be a good fit for your startup.

3. Search for Passion

Needless to say, ‘passion’ matters a lot. As rightly put by French philosopher Denis Diderot,

Only passions, great passions can elevate the soul to great things.”

All the great things in the world have been achieved by the individuals who are passionate about certain things in life.

My friend, passion nurtures progress. If employees really enjoy what they do, they work harder naturally to get better at what they do. If they do not enjoy what they do, they will not work as hard. However, hiring a passionate employee is never easy. All the people who you are going to interview will claim that they are passionate about what they do.

How can you find the reality?

You need to interview the person carefully. There is no other way. Ask the right questions and read body language in a profound and accurate way.

If you know someone in your team who can gauge the candidate well and looking for the same spirit and passion like yours, then include them on the interview panel. A passionate person can easily sniff the similar one out.
