Confessions of a Bibliophile
My reading journey so far. Some of my recommendations.
I am a Bibliophile. But I only love to read fiction novels of crime, suspense, drama, thriller, romance. I don't know why but I cannot stand nonfictions and motivational books. Maybe later in life, I will pick one.
Being an introvert I got into the habit of reading quite soon. I still remember my first fiction was — David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. From reading The Princess Diaries, Nancy Drew Novels to reading Jeffrey Archer, Jodi Picoult, Brit Bennett, I have come a long way.
My dalliance with books went on my whole school life but sadly we drifted away when I entered college. My interests changed. There was barely any time to read books. So, I thought.
And the boom of social media was the last straw. That was the time when Instagram was the new thing, posting ‘cool’ snaps on Snapchat (yes, guilty) was the essential starter pack of a teenager. I didn't pick up a book for 2 years. It's not like I didn't make any efforts. But that reading discipline and interest just weren't there. So, I dropped it and I knew that one day we will unite again.
Sometimes it is better not to freak out if we fall out of our old habits. It is really not that big of a deal than we make it. We should just go with the flow and if it is meant to be it will come back at right time.
And, we did. During my summer break of final year, there was so much going on that my mind needed peace. And, I knew my comfort area where I can forget and let go of anything. I picked up a copy of A Thousand Splendid Suns. A beautiful, beautiful story of women's struggles, friendships, and patriarchy in the land of Kabul under the siege of the Taliban. ( A must-read)
I owe a lot to these stories and novels. No, there isn't any book that ‘transformed’ or flipped my life. Yet, they have taught me a lot of life lessons which I may have learned late if it weren't for them. I got to know hidden aspects of life. I have read all kinds of stories — Stories of valiance, stories of a second chance in love, stories of motherhood, marriage, addictions, the life of minorities and so much more.
Books have the beautiful quality of transporting you to another world. You can feel the characters, you can feel their emotions and the depth of their lives. Getting your hands on a good book is no less than heavenly.
And if I am reading a gut-wrenching book and I have to stop the reading in the middle, then God help me! That's first-degree torture.
Since I love my readers and my books so much. I have decided to share with you all my favorite books which will surely keep you hooked till you finish them. These are jaw-dropping stories and you might need a glass of water by your side at all times.
If you want to witness endless mind-boggling suspense you should pick up The Push by Ashley Audrain and The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.
If you want to read stories of brave mothers who’d do anything for their child you should pick up Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult or The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah.
Reading The Vanishing Affair by Brit Bennett and Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah makes you realize there is so much more hidden inside each one of us than we portray. You can never know a person’s back story unless they allow you to see it.
These are just some of my faves. There are so many others which I can’t wait to share with you all in my upcoming articles.
I hope you enjoy reading them.
Do share your favorite books so that I can read them. I’d love your book recommendations.
