Moonriver Quest 2: Feast of Champions
Rebuilding Moonriver Valley Part III
As the Champions and special guests ate their fill of the feast before them, the Kusama settled in and slept peacefully in the tree.
One Champion stood and raised his glass. The boisterous discussion of his comrades quieted and all turned to look. He toasted their journey and congratulated their efforts in the quests thus far. They all drank in agreement, patting each other on the back.
The Moonwarriors shared stories of the quests and reminisced about the challenges they had overcome. Until now, this story of their triumph over the never-sleeping dragon had remained a mystery to the people of Moonriver Valley, who now gathered around the table listening.
One Champion stood and began.
The Tale
As we approached the bridge to cross the chasm at the base of the Sungod’s mountain to retrieve The Artifact, we had a feeling of great danger. When we started to cross we were startled by a great phoenix which set the bridge on fire. We lost many Moonwarriors here.
He raised his cup again and they all drank in a show of respect.
Those of us that made it across gazed upon the sword in the rock left in the wake of the phoenix flames and looked to the moon for guidance. The sword called to me, so I stepped forward and grasped the handle. It was hot to the touch, and I pulled it from the stone summoning all the strength of the fallen for the sake of the whole of Moonriver Valley. We began our ascent of the mountain with the sword in my hand.
We had not climbed far when we happened upon the cave. A few brave Moonwarriors scouted ahead and it appeared safe to move inside. The cavern inside the mountain was momentous and smoke drifted from the rear of the rocky space.
I led with the way, sword poised. As we walked to the depths of the cavern, the never-sleeping dragon came into view. It appeared to be part of the mountain at first, but we took in the enormity of its size and prowess as it stirred. The thing stood almost to the ceiling of the cave, maybe 40 feet tall. It had massive wings and claws. Long teeth filled its gaping, angry mouth.
Instinctively the Moonwarriors fell into formation to surround the dragon. It flexed its wings, throwing some warriors roughly to the ground with the gusting wind it generated.
The bravest warriors surged forward and seized hold of the dragon‘s wings. Their collective weight pinned them to the ground. The free Moonwarriors scattered to draw the flames shooting from the dragon’s gnarled mouth. Covering my face in defense of the heat, I crept forward to position myself close enough that I was out of the dragon’s line of sight.
I was so near, that I could hear the beast’s heart pounding in its chest. Poised to strike a fatal blow to its heart, I hesitated when I noticed a thick golden chain wrapped tightly around the dragon’s legs and tail. The links dug deeply into its scaly flesh, crusted blood blotting out the shine of the gold in some places. The dragon was not an ally of the Sungod, but its prisoner.
The sword glowed, and I knew what to do. I served one mighty blow to the portion of the chain fastened to the rocky floor. The clanging sound reverberated so loudly that it stunned all living things in attendance. I gazed upward and found the dragon’s eye burning into mine.
It appeared to nod in respect before shaking itself painfully free of the chain, screaming as it ripped the confinements from its flesh. The chain crashed to the ground and the dragon folded its wings. I raised my sword once more, showing the beast and the Moonwarriors that the battle was over. The warriors moved aside and the beast fumbled forward, legs undoubtedly no longer used to the freedom of movement. Once it had stumbled past them, the dragon gave one last look at the Moonwarriors before it stretched its wings and flew from the cave, causing a shower of broken rock to tumble from the places its wings touched.
We ran from the cave and reached the entrance in time to watch the dragon take to the sky. We witnessed it disappear over the horizon but had not a moment to rest because a rumbling inside the cave grew louder. The beast had caused a rockslide and the Moonwarriors fled to safety as the mountain cave was filled with debris. One warrior was lost in the rubble and though we tried, we could not rescue him. With our mission now complete and The Golden Artifact in our possession, we began our long journey home.
As the warrior finished recounting the tale, there was a murmur in the crowd. They pointed toward the Kusama tree. Standing there, leaning painfully and grievously injured, was the Moonwarrior that had been trapped in the mountain.
In stunned silence, the Champions watched as he painfully moved toward the table, falling to his knees before reaching it. He had used his last dregs of strength to make it home. One of the Moonriver people, a woman, ran forward to meet him. She threw herself into his arms. Her tears soaked his chest. She reached out her hand to a small child nearby who shyly approached. The child hugged its father and he stroked its face one last time before he collapsed to the ground.
A Champion moved forward to collect the now weeping mother and child. The fallen Moonwarrior’s Champion status would be bestowed upon the child so his legacy could live on. This Champion’s progeny would be known as the Chance Champion.
