When my wife, Elisa, and I were dating, one of our favorite ways to spend the afternoon was in the children’s section of a Barnes & Noble or lazily flipping through YouTube clips from vintage Sesame Street episodes. We are definitely kids at heart, and so it should be no surprise that reading kids books is one of our beloved pastimes. Now being parents, it’s a daily occurrence in our home, but sometimes you just need to read a book out-loud and press record. Here are a few selections we created over the years.

C’mon to the Museum

A reading of “The Word my Son Learned at the American Museum of Natural History,” a short story by Raquel D’Apice, stand-up comic and writer of The Ugly Volvo blog. Please follow her amazing stories and share them with your friends… and then come and visit me with your kids at the Museum sometime!

Skippyjon Jones

Skippyjon Jones is a hilarious children’s picture book by Judith Byron Schachner from 2001, and one of Elisa’s favorites to read aloud. Get ready to meet El Skippito, a great sword-fighter ready to battle banditos the world over!

Le Petit Nicolas: A Game of Soccer

A reading of one of my all-time favorites: René Goscinny’s classic children’s book, Le Petit Nicolas. This chapter follows Nicolas and his schoolmates into the local empty lot for a really excellent weekend soccer match. If only the game would actually get started…

The Paperbag Princess

A storybook reading of Robert Munsch’s classic storybook with an original soundtrack. Princess Elizabeth is slated to marry Prince Ronald when a dragon attacks the castle and kidnaps Ronald. What comes next is anyone’s guess!

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

This reading of Judith Viorst’s award-winning story features some of Elisa’s best professional whining. After all, young Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in this hair. And it got worse…
