A look at the top design trends which will impact user experience in 2017

Design has always been about understanding the user. Today, the user is heavily influenced by ongoing socio-political developments as well as breakthroughs in technological advancements. We strongly believe that all this is resulting in a significant shift in user behaviour which businesses need to be cognizant of.

Keeping all this in mind, we decided to come up with a list of design trends which will influence how user design is and should be conceived this new year. These UX trends have been shaped by this behavioural shift as mentioned above.

We have divided these into 3 broad groups :

1. Trends with a Twist

These are trends which have been around for a while but will now evolve and develop a fresh and different perspective in 2017

  • Personalisation — Personalisation has become hygiene. Users are now looking for surprises to break the monotony
  • Minimalism — Minimalism is evolving in accordance to the accuracy of content and services provided
  • Sitemaps — With the advent of dynamic applications, sitemaps are facing extinction
  • Living for the moment — Users who are born in the digital era communicate through experiences!

2. Trends ready for a Prime Time

These are trends which were being increasingly adopted till now and will further increase and consolidate their sphere of influence in UX Design

  • Multi-sensory feedback — Haptics has a jumpstart. But what about the other senses?
  • Security & Trust — I’ll share with you only if I trust you. Design needs to understand that
  • Zero UI — It’s on the upswing. But you cant ignore visuals
  • Contextual Apps — Too many apps to download. Can they be just enough and just in time
  • VR/AR Design — Sure as eggs is eggs. We agree with all the other predictions out there

3. The ones which are out there

These are the outliers. Trends which may or may not be significant in 2017, the jury is yet to decide

  • Responsible Design — Responsibility beyond me! Think about the environment and sustainability as well
  • Deconstructivism — Let’s break it to make it
  • Design Ghettos — Will local Facebook drive the next Arab spring? Is globalism overrated?
