We Loved, But Were Never Aligned
love alone was not enough
We met in debate
Eye-balling each other’s competition
– ourselves.
Little side glances turned into
Ongoing chats, topics ranging from
Vague insights of the future, to
Endless thoughts about the purpose of our existence
Daily, we were falling — and falling fast
Blooming, we both were
Unable to deny our attraction
Tossing and turning, occur
Weeks turned to months
Eventually you confessed
Regretfully, as you lamented years after, via text
Easing into the start of our relationship
New,
Each other’s first real relationship
Valiant we were, in the face of naysayers
Eagerly, we basked in public validation of our couple photos
Regretfully, disregarding the main root of our problems
Alas, my first love
Love alone was not enough
Iridescent, as our love may be
Gradually we realised we were
Never aligned — many things compromised it could not
Eager as we were,
Damned will our futures be if we were still together
We Loved, But Were Never Aligned
Chaotic as we were
Overall we survived
Not counting the handful of times I
Forced smiles as you went girl after girl within the next year
Ironically through those times
Damsel in distress, I was not
Actually, it was these moments which led to the building of my empire
No longer the little girl with naïve dreams, rather
The princess who
Saves herself in this one
Confidants –
We thankfully became, after.
On our own separate journeys
We thrive
And that is what matters, our shared laughter.
