A startup only needs 3 roles. Adding more is a waste of time, money and people.

Customer Developer

Without paying customers, the world doesn’t need your startup. Priority #1 of any startup is to find the Right People to whom you will make the Right Promises so you will get paid.

Product Developer

Prove to your Right Customers that you can Deliver on Your Promises. Develop only what is needed to prove it once. Then prove you can repeat it.

Business Developer

You don’t have a startup unless it survives. Find a revenue model to sustain the business and explicitly manage the team, resources and partnerships.

You could be 3 people. You could be 2. Or you could be 1. These three jobs need to get done in any startup.
