The Power of Learning by Doing
Working with research and with students, Evin understands the importance of physical learning — learning-by-doing. We talked to Evin about the role of physical play in adapting children into the modern life.
Why is it important to start Cubiq?
Experience from my own work and work with students shows that you need to get information through your hands and learn by doing. If children lose this from an early age, it’s going to harm their own development. If we want to grow as a society, we need to remember to develop our kids for the for the future. We cannot deprive them of this fundamental skill of learning through touch and feel.
How will Cubiq change the world?
Today’s parents don’t have the skills to support children in their learning. Cubiq focuses on these skills. Modern parents grew up in the digital revolution. So it’s becoming more and more important to put focus on physical play. Cubiq will make the physical play more and more available and easy to adapt into the modern life.
Children develop 75% of their brain between the age of 0 and 3. Now that the world turns even more digital, we need to remember that people are the ones developing things. Learning with hands would prevent children from getting detached from the world.
What is special about Cubiq?
When everyone is talking about making everything digital, Cubiq is the opposite — it is physical. And we live in a time when it is needed. Cubiq’s methods and philosophy are based on hundreds of years of research, proven by pedagogues. It Is something our grandparents grew up with. It brings real value to children. And this is very special.
What are you going to do next semester?
The natural thing would be to start building a site and to pick some areas to tackle, like mathematics, nature or astronomy. We will then develop the toys and the kits with area experts. Ken has already a network in this area. We will find a smart way to produce and deliver the products.
What is your background?
I’m an engineer. I studied automation cybernetic. It includes modeling of the world and just everything around us. But I went away from that. I work as a research assistant in the medical field and do some teaching. I have some knowledge of rapid prototyping. 3D printing is something I work with every day. I have a lot of projects going on and like to be busy.
I like that Cubiq is a combination of being physical with making things. Physical play while learning is my thing. When you do a project with your hands and with the tools you have around you, you remember better. You don’t remember reading a book and going to class. You remember the stuff you do. That’s what I work for and try to spread that idea.
What happens if Cubiq doesn’t get launched?
We will launch it anyway! Ken is already working on it and selling kits to parents that understandwhy it is important.
How did Moonwalk experience help you?
I’ve become more confident. It forced me to be more out there, test things out and execute. I’ve always liked the idea of working with people, but I never knew. In Moonwalk I understood how good it feels to be part of a team. I don’t ever want to work alone on anything again. It made me more aware of what I want and what I don’t want. It’s been an eye-opener for me personally.
Everyone helps everyone. If we fail, we fail together. And if the win, we win together. There’s no risk.
What would you tell to someone who haven't started in a Moonwalk Program?
You work in a team and you learn very fast. If you want to do entrepreneurship, that’s the way to start. This is a good way of seeing what it takes. And seeing how easy it is when you work in teams. It’s a lot of work, but it’s easy work. You’re not alone, and that feels good. So it’s not scary at all. It might seem scary in the beginning, but you’ve going to love these people.
And eventually, it’s going to become multiple companies.
