Mobile-first indexing, the (new) way to your customers

Mobile has become the right path for leads and sales online. In the midst of the last 5 years, Google has implemented tons of new features to its own search engine and indexing system, trying to resolve the main issues around users’ Internet experience, which all deliver -eventually- into UX consistency.

Indexation is about to change

Otherwise said, “consistency” is what we would depict as the experience around search results and indexing. After crawling through the entire web, Google’s search engine adds the information through its algorithm, giving the page a determined spot between its ranking.

As of today, the search results are based on the desktop version of a website, but that’s about to change.

The Internet giant is having a shift towards what we now will know as mobile-first indexing — it’s sure that this is a key shift to all business and marketing matters.

Because mobile matters, more

As we stated before, the ranking is taking desktop experience into account first (as of today); otherwise said, a user searching through a mobile device may land into a landing page with different content and less information than its desktop version — this is, of course, a poor experience.

Then again, the mobile-first indexing is the exact opposite. Google wants to ensure users reach the expected content, and is now shifting to a new process in which indexing and ranking is based on mobile experience.

As of today, if you’ve worked on providing an integral experience to your potential customers (i.e. your visitors), either they are navigating from a desktop or computer or a mobile phone, you should not worry at all.

However, if this is not your actual scenario, you should start to modify your structure to ensure content parity; moreover, if you create AMP pages or AMP landing pages, the relationship between these and mobile pages should be clarified to the search engine.

Last thoughts

Our peers at Moõse and VIKO Group are keeping an eye every day the added technicalities that’ll sprout from the new ecosystem around mobile-first indexing. Of course, we are ready to react and make further changes that will help you to reach your customers through great UX. Stay alert!
