The new Google AMP consent component regarding GDPR
The GDPR deadline is near. With May 25th on the line, Google and its AMP Project staff just announced a new component that will enable publishers to surface site notifications for users’ navigation consent.
In the announcement, the AMP staff mentions that “the features to be launched include the ability to show the choices in user interface notices via ‘accept’ and ‘reject’ semantics”; otherwise said, this will enable users to set up AMP element behaviors in response to their choices (this may even affect how AMP landing pages are displayed).
The proposed format, while a bit messy for publishers needing the acquisition of different types of consent for analytics or tracking, is shown in the sample code image below:
Collective development and support
As of today, the project team is inviting and encouraging publishers to participate in the component’s development so support can be available as soon as possible.
This effort will surely enhance the already existing support for vendor-provided capabilities (over 100 as of today), such as analytics, video players or other kinds of embedded content.
While suggestions, configuration options and component’s format information is slowly surfacing, publishers do know that issues around the GDPR consent and compliance are complicated (for example, usage consent acquisition).
We bid farewell to this article reminding you that, as of today, GDPR compliance applies only to EU citizens visiting a publisher’s site; how that goes beyond mere country detection is quite complicated, but we’ll surely approach this topic later at Moõse and the VIKO Group.
