The peer to peer car sharing model allows car owners to rent out their idle cars on an hourly basis, which can be hired for a few hours, a day or even up to a month.

Most Malaysians get around by car. Although the new extension of LRT lines and the launch of MRT have enhanced the public transportation system, Malaysians generally still prefer to drive. Therefore it is not surprising that Malaysia has the third-highest rate of car ownership in the world, with 93 percent of households owning a car according to a 2014 report by Nielsen, even though Malaysia is the 2nd most expensive country to own a car.

The current rise of ride hailing trend did not solve all the problems of transport. Some Malaysians like to travel to faraway places, while some are car lovers seeking to drive multiple type of car or experience the joy of driving their dream car. As the sharing economy starts to be more common, more informed Malaysians are looking for newer and better transportation options, hence the birth of a rather new concept known as car sharing.

The car sharing concept is still somewhat foreign to Malaysians. It is similar to a car rental service (but better!), in which one can rent a car through an app on a smartphone. Car-sharing has become a cost-effective option for those who cannot afford the high cost of owning a car.

The peer to peer car sharing model allows car owners to rent out their idle cars on an hourly basis, which can be hired for a few hours, a day or even up to a month. It is a win-win situation where the car renter can rent with a lower than commercial price while vehicle owners get to earn extra income to cover their car installments and maintenance fees.

Meet Moovby, the first company in Malaysia to introduce such mobile application. We have been operating the peer to peer car sharing platform on web and mobile to provide a better option to our fellow Malaysians. Experience how car-sharing happens in Moovby by downloading our apps, available for iOS and Android.

We want to change Malaysian’s concept of car ownership. Car will no longer be exclusive to car owners, it will be available to anyone and everyone that wants to rent it. The biggest hurdle for Malaysians is trust. That is why we strive to fill in the gap, and move Malaysia into a more connected economy where Malaysians are more trusting of their fellow citizens. We also recognize the importance of mobility freedom and want to make transport easily accessible to everyone. We envision car-sharing to be extremely common in Malaysia by year 2025, and we would like to be the engine that moves Malaysia into a new era of car ownership.

In the following blog post, we will touch on the comparison between car owning and car sharing. Stay tuned!
