INT. DREW’S BEDROOM NIGHT
DREW and LYLAH have just made love for the second time, still tipsy from the margaritas. Drew has his head buried in Lylah’s chest as she strokes his hair.
LYLAH
Ok, so here’s a dumb question.
DREW
Shoot.
LYLAH
When you go to the grocery store, and you’re picking out apples… Do you imagine that the apples are saying “Pick me, pick me” or that they’re saying, “Don’t pick me, don’t pick me!”
DREW
(pause, laughs lightly)
Both.
LYLAH
Both?
DREW
Yep. The best looking apples that are ripe and fresh are saying “Don’t pick me” because they’re happy where they are. And the old ones that are all bruised up and looking for an ego boost are saying, “Pick me.”
LYLAH
Wow. You are the only person who’s ever answered that question that way.
DREW
Oh so this is an interview? You have questions you ask everyone?
LYLAH
No…
DREW
It’s ok. I have questions, too.
LYLAH
Like what?
DREW
(sleepily)
Oh I don’t know.
LYLAH
Come on.
DREW
Ok… What is the definition of true love?
LYLAH
(pause)
That’s a good one. I think…it’s when…your happiness is dependent on them being happy.
DREW
You read that somewhere.
LYLAH
True.
DREW
True love is this… When you’re abducted by aliens, and once they’re done experimenting on you, they tell you that you’ve earned a chance to do your life all over again, and they want to know if you want to do it all over again with the same woman… and you say yes.
LYLAH
Wow.
DREW
Yeah I stole that from somewhere too.
LYLAH
I figured.
DREW
I’m sleepy.
LYLAH
Go to sleep.
DREW
Ok.
LYLAH
Do you believe in love at first sight?
DREW
(falling asleep)
No.
LYLAH
I didn’t used to.
DREW
(snoring)
Mmm…
LYLAH
(slowly)
But… when I saw you I understood so many things that I’d never understood before. I understood lightning bolts, feeling like I couldn’t breathe, or not wanting to breathe in fear of disturbing the air in the stillness of being near you. I understood love at first sight. I understood the need to shout it out and tell anyone and everyone about something so magical. I wanted to look at you forever. I wanted to do whatever you wanted. And I don’t like doing anything for anybody. I prayed you had the intelligence to go along with the looks but the truth was I didn’t care. I had to see you again whether or not you did. I fell in love before I knew your name, your occupation, or anything else about you. Now I see why there’s nothing truer than that. My feelings for you are based on nothing more than your presence in a room or the way your eyes met mine… as little as that seemed to happen.
Drew is snoring.
LYLAH (CONT’D)
Drew.. I love you.
