The Good Social Media Can Bring

Social Media can mean so many different things to different people. For some it might be how many followers they can get, for others it might be the amount of times they post on their page. Personally, I use social media to raise awareness and to stay involved within my sorority and life on campus. As much as social media sites can be harmful, they can also have amazing positives aspects such as raising awareness or getting the word out about something quickly.

In high school, I used social media to raise money for a special event with my friend Brad who had Cerebral Palsy. I met Brad in our Leadership class when I was a sophomore and he was a junior. Although his wheelchair obviously set him apart from the others in the room, the Cerebral Palsy that stressed his body was not evident. Brad and I decided that we wanted to run a half marathon together; him being in a wheelchair and I would be pushing him. We used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and any other social networking site to tell our community about our great idea. Within 24 hours we had raised over $2,000 in order to buy a custom chair that was made for people with disabilities who wanted to participate in races. In this case, Brad and I’s fundraising event was only successful with the help of social media awareness. If we had not been able to spread the word about his story and our determination, there would have been no chair or race for us to accomplish together.

Another example of how social media has been used in a positive way is with my friend Jake. He was paralysed the day before my senior year by jumping into a pool head first. Jake’s story shocked my community, but with the help of social media, especially GoFundMe, Jake’s family was able to raise thousands of dollars to help pay for the extensive medical attention he needed. Even after the accident our community continued to reach out to them everyday and drop off cards, home cooked meals, and their condolences. With the help of social media, Jake and his family were able to not worry as much about money in a hard time.

Within the huge world that social media contains, it does provide as much good as it does bad. From personal experience, people can use social media to not only raise awareness in hard times, but also change people’s lives. If people use it carefully and with good intentions, it will be beneficial in the long run.
