The Morehouse College football team finished the season with a 4–6 record, a disappointing result compared to the success that they had early last year. The Maroon Tigers started off last year 6–0 but finished 1–3 in their division, meaning no championship game. This year did not go as planned, yet Morehouse started off the season on a positive note, giving Division 1 opponent, Alabama A&M, a run for their money in the Black College Hall of Fame Classic. They lost on a last-second touchdown score.

The House’ couldn’t string together consecutive wins throughout the season. Junior Quarterback Michael Sims offered a take on the difference between last year and this year.

“I felt that we still had a large amount of talent returning to the offense this year but we lacked focus at critical points in games and that came back to bite us.”

Senior Linebacker Jon Mathis, who led the team in tackles, and Sims both pointed to their wins at homecoming and versus Clark Atlanta as the best moments of the season.

“When we won homecoming and senior night in the same year because in the past that hasn’t been done,” Mathis stated.

“Some of the higher moments of the season were getting big wins at home for Homecoming and our win over Clark Atlanta,” Sims said.

Morehouse beat Clark by 1 point in a shootout in the last game of the season, where both teams combined for over 800 yards. Clark Atlanta was fighting for its first win of the season. The game brought some last-minute motivation for both teams, as they both had losing records and were out championship game contention.

This was the senior day that all student-athletes want. To face your rival for the last time and win. Mathis reflected on his time at Morehouse.

“I walked on at Morehouse so when I got here no one knew who I was,” Mathis said. “This was my last year playing football and even though we lost more than we won, I can honestly say I had fun. I have built good relationships with people that I’ll never forget. I’m truly glad I spent my last year of eligibility here at Morehouse.”

Sims, who will return for his senior year, has a positive outlook on what happened this season.

“I’m looking forward to how we bounce back in 2020,” Sims stated. “We learned a lot of lessons this year as a team and it’s only going to help us leading into next season.”
