While more closely associated with advancing the social aspects of college life, an oftentimes overlooked value of fraternities is their emphasis on community service. These acts take many forms for Greek life including partnering with local businesses to fundraise for charity, hosting food drives to support community food banks, as well as carrying out acts of environmental stewardship.

With spring well underway, the reopening of the Memorial Union terrace marks the return of the usual buzz of students enjoying the lakefront. While the disappearance of snow is a welcome sight to most, the newly uncovered ground of Lakeshore Path and the adjacent Muir Woods is often accompanied with litter. To demonstrate their appreciation of the environment and one of UW-Madison’s most iconic features, Lake Mendota, the brothers of Sigma Pi hold an annual Lakeshore Path cleanup.

In an effort to preserve the quality of our campus’ green spaces, the Tau Chapter of Sigma Pi takes advantage of the warm weather to spend an afternoon picking up trash along the path as part of their Altruistic Campus Experience initiative. What started as a one-time environmental project in 2016 has now become an annual tradition for the Fraternity, and represents a culmination of past years’ community service projects. This year’s cleanup took place on April 28 during which the brothers of Sigma Pi took to the trails of Muir Woods and Lakeshore Path to fulfill their responsibilities as students of this wonderful campus.

As future leaders of tomorrow, our generation is tasked with the continued protection of our environment. While a seemingly impossible task, small acts of environmental friendliness like the Lakeshore cleanup, demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship to combat issues of climate change and environmental degradation. Sigma Pi Tau Chapter hopes that through our continued environmental efforts, we will inspire other local organizations to take action and continue to promote such values across UW-Madison and its surrounding community.
