Walking to the beach today, I saw a pair of mallard ducks, and I was struck by the obvious contradiction of high-school-level evolution lessons.

The coloring of the female is dull brown, as camouflage, so she won’t be seen by predators. And the male is bright green to catch the eye of females, for mating purposes.

These opposite strategies, by birds of the same species, are both supposed to promote survival of the species.
