Brief Reprieve

The fisherman: evening effect by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, c. 1865.

Brief Reprieve

Beneath the pound of the rain

and the rush of the tides,

a gentle peace abides,

a weary ease.

A thrush chirps softly,

calmly through the thunder;

a worm crawls from under

the burden of earth.

It’s a reverential hush:

liquid peace pours from heaven,

as God snores

in weary ease.
