He bought a yellow rose

He bought a yellow rose,

not for anyone in particular.

He was alone,

and didn’t want to be alone.

So he bought a yellow rose;

and walking down Main Street,

every woman over forty who he passed

smiled at him.

Some waved.

Some greeted him as if they knew him.

One walked up to him and hugged him and said,

“Thank you. You shouldn’t have.”

They walked arm-in-arm to her house.

She put it in a vase and cooked supper for the two of them.

They’ve been married now for ten years.
