Perhaps Today

It is a strange
moment in adulthood,
like the rising
of a different sun
over the same horizon,

when you realize
permission
is not something
you will receive —

so, one morning
you lie in bed and
touch your rib cage
and listen to the world
of your neighbor’s yard
and decide today,
perhaps today,
you will start living.
