Cloë Atkinson, managing director at Mortgage Engine

It’s been all systems go for Cloë, our managing director, and the team since the launch of Mortgage Engine’s industry-changing API solution.

We spoke with Cloë to hear what she’s been up to, what’s new at the Engine and stories to look out for in the future.

What’s your role at the Engine?

As managing director, I’m responsible for overseeing all aspects of the business and ensuring everything runs smoothly. It’s my job to keep in touch with industry and making sure its needs are being met by Mortgage Engine’s offering. I’m the face of the company out in the market, regularly meeting with lenders and brokers to showcase our API solutions, how they can improve the lending process and customer engagement.

What’s it like to work here?

We’re building a diverse team of tech talent here at Mortgage Engine. Cultural flexibility and modern working are big things for us. As a start-up in the fintech space, we can have periods of fast-paced, intense working — but the rewards are huge when you’re collaborating to develop something special.

What does the future have in store for Mortgage Engine?

Over the next few months we’ll be working to connect more lenders to the platform, enabling brokers access to the information they need for customers at the push of a button. Our focus will be to ensure the technical integrations work for lenders, providing them with whatever back-end support they need to get the most out of the Engine’s solution.

Our next priority will be to increase market share, working to help improve the day-to-day of even more brokers across the sector.

In the longer term, we’ll be looking at the open banking space, and any other platform integrations available for pre-population and data transfer that improve the customer journey.

We’ll work to support digitalisation across the entire market, creating technology that helps the mortgage process work more efficiently for every party involved.

And life outside the Engine?

I’m proud to be a working mum and have two wonderful children, Charlotte (11) and Billy (9), with my husband Mark. It’s really important to me to share that message: it’s possible to start and run a business while raising a family.

I’m also a marathon widow — my husband runs around 15 marathons a year around the world! I also hit the road, albeit at a slightly slower pace, and regularly embark on Ultra Challenges with family and friends. In September, I walked 50km with my dad as part of training for a 100km race next year. We’re raising money for Sands, a charity which does incredible work supporting those who have been affected by stillbirths or neonatal deaths.

And finally, I believe it’s important to keep learning. This year, I have done coding courses to help better understand our tech. Whenever I can find the time, I enjoy reading and being inspired by business books such as Moment of Life by Melinda Gates, Factfulness by Hans Rosling and The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz.
