Of Gold and Shit

“For “America”Cattelan replaced the toilet in this restroom with a fully functional replica cast in 18-karat gold, making available to the public an extravagant luxury product seemingly intended for the 1 percent.” Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Guggenheim features America, an interactive installation by Maurizio Cattelan.

A golden toilet you can use.

I like conceptual art. I like to interpret the association chain and decipher the language of images and delve into myth making. It’s a fun game.

Left: Meret Oppenheim. Object. Right. Marina Ambramovic, Snakes.

If done right, it pushes the mind into a different dimension; creates the space outside of habitual thinking.

Playing in a museum is fun. We become participants rather than observers. Creators. It’s all cool. There are no rules in art. I love it.

And the lowly subject is no stranger to my shameless pen.

Recently my article about golden showers, Hitler and Trump provoked some fierce response from squeamish neo-Nazis at Writerbeat website and the article was removed. Oops.

Freud, of course, had a lot to say about turning excrements to gold and certain anal traits of financial professionals.

The main character of my novel We, Monsters, Mistress Rose bumped into a lover of toilet brushes during her short-lived career at a BDSM dungeon.

The reference to Duchamp’s urinal is self-evident. A bow to the master.

The everyday object converted to art. It can be reversed; it is the very material of myth-making. Read more here.

The reference to Trump’s golden toilet is even more self-evident.

I didn’t get the photo of the said toilet. Left: Trump’s Hollywood star prank, May 2017. Right: Golden sink in the bathroom of Trump’s private plane. (CBS News photo.)

Maurizio Cattelan’s work made perfect illustrations for essays on propaganda. I was so going to go.

But… I always read everything, including fine print. I just like to read. I read small print on candy wrappers and such. And read I did:

Support for Maurizio Cattelan: “America” is provided by Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson, Wendy Fisher, Marian Goodman Gallery, Dakis and Lietta Joannou, Svetlana Kuzmicheva-Uspenskaya and Alexey Kuzmichev, Galerie Perrotin, Beth Swofford, and Dasha Zhukova.

Now it is the time to play. I am going to speak in puzzles. You probably don’t know the names. Well, neither did I — before November 8.

Alexey Kuzmichev. Alfa Group. Letter One.

This is my interactive art piece. You have to google stuff. You might even get a catharsis. Consider it a puzzle.

Dasha Zhukova. Roman Abramovich. Evraz. Steel. XL Keystone pipeline.

Top Left: Ivanka Trump and Dasha Zhukova. Top Right: Zhukova and Roman Abramovich. Putin and Abramovich.

Wow. Such art lovers.

I never got to check the golden toilet out in person. But maybe it’s okay.

Who knows if they record you and keep the videos?

Or, perhaps, the Russian oligarchs enjoy a good old post-modernist joke. I wonder if it all just a bad post-modernist joke.
