What are the values we want to live by?

As purpose-led individuals, we’ve spent some time considering some of the key values we might like to embed and foster within the coworking and startup community here at Mosaik.

In this post we wanted to share some of the inspiration behind why we believe what we believe in the form of a reading and watching playlist — enjoy!

The power of community.

The incredible things that can happen when people with energy, ambition and shared values come together to create a future they believe in.

Startup Communities by Brad Feld helps us explore what it takes to build and contribute to a truly vibrant, thriving and collaborative startup ecosystem.

Joel Gascoigne from Buffer on The magic of startup communities. Written back in 2012, we think this article is still relevant in showing us how important startup communities can be in building world-scale startups like Buffer.

Technology.

The power to use technology to shape our rapidly changing, increasingly interconnected world for the better.

Check out the ‘Breaking Smart’ series. Season 1 explores in 20 mind-tingling essays the oft-quoted notion that ‘software is eating the world’.

“Live in the future, then build what’s missing.” We’re avid readers of Paul Graham’s essays, and this one on how to come up with startup ideas is one of our favourites.

Lifelong learning.

This one is super important to us. We’re frustrated with short-termist attitudes that we sometimes see in the startup world, the single-minded obsession of ‘being the next unicorn’ and a narrow striving for one goal excepting all others; money. We believe the journey is just as important as the destination.

This article from David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and founder at Basecamp, The day I became a millionaire, provokes us to think about what truly moves our own ‘needles of deep satisfaction’ and how we can keep those things close to us, even as we aim to create something ambitious and world-reaching.

Positivity.

Productive failure leads to faster learning. Just like working out early in the morning sucks a bit more but gets you fit faster, falling down more times and getting back up afterwards are inevitable steps in your journey.

Keep your head up, gather strength from your new learnings and the community around you, and keep going.

Collaboration.

We believe that co-creation is the future. We also know that working together towards an unknown end-goal can be scary as well. We strive to be courageous, diverse, and open to turning solutions on their heads, knowing that it’s when we throw our passion and emotion into the mix that great things can emerge.

This thnk piece is a wonderful asset to set us off in the right mindset.

Living and working with intention.

Never settle. Take a watch of Steve Jobs’ commencement speech:

Openness.

Crafting an open and non-judgmental community is crucial to us. In a rapidly changing world, we must have a curious approach in order to avoid building our futures on false outdated assumptions.
