Happy Friday and we hope you all had a fun filled past week… also cheers to the weekend! This week’s shop feature was so fun to do and we are excited to introduce Pax Organics for Baby to you all. ❤
Lauren is the Mama behind the scenes for this organic and ethically responsible shop. She has two toddler aged boys and views herself as a “naptime entreprenuer”. As a Mama who has gone through TWO teething babies she swears by these necklaces to help keep them distracted and content.
Pax Organics for Baby offers organic teething and nursing necklaces for all of you eco-friendly mamas out there. They are VERY affordable and each one is handmade by a Mama like you! Grab one now and read on to see our Q & A with Lauren to learn a little more about her and a behind the scenes look at her shop.
Our Q & A with Lauren:
1. Tell us a little about you, your shop and what you offer.
My name is Lauren, but most of the time, I answer to “mama.” :) I am a San Diego transplant living in the Bay Area with my husband Daniel and two little boys, Owen (4 1/2) and Paxton (1 1/2). And, we actually have our third little one on the way, due April 2017! Very, very exciting times!
My shop, Pax Organics For Baby, offers organic teething and nursing necklaces made only from natural materials- 100% organic cotton and untreated maple wood. Mamas can wear my necklaces to give their nursing babies something to occupy busy hands during feedings. They also provide safe, natural teething relief for babies with sore teething gums.
2. What inspired you to open your shop?
Short answer: My son, Paxton! As a newborn, Pax was a very distracted little nurser as well as a sensitive teether. I volunteer with a breastfeeding support group, and I had met many moms who used nursing necklaces with their babies.
Being a crafty, diy-type girl, I decided to make some myself. I wasn’t into the silicone plastic-y look that I had seen, so instead I created some that fit my personal style- a mix of earthy, feminine, relaxed, and classic. My son and I both loved them and they elicited a lot of questions and compliments when I wore them out and about. With encouragement from family and friends, I started researching what it would actually take to open a shop and sell them. The idea just sounded exciting and fun, so I decided to dive in and do it!
3. How would you describe your shop’s style and feel?
I wanted Pax Organics For Baby to have a very natural feel to it to reflect my values of sustainability and quality. I use only organic materials because I believe that purity and simplicity are the safest and best choices, especially for baby products. I wanted to create products that would meet a need without harming the environment or putting babies’ safety at risk. I try to reflect this idea in all of my business’s branding, from the logo to the packaging down to the shipping materials used.
4. What is your favorite item from your shop? Why?
I love so many different patterns and colors, it’s hard to choose a favorite!
If I had to choose, it would probably be a floral peony print necklace. It has coral pink and white flowers on a muted blue background. My wedding flowers were pink peonies, so I think this pattern reminds me of love, joy, and romance.
5. If you could give one piece of advice to fellow mamas on starting a business, what would it be?
I would say, don’t be afraid to invest in yourself! When I first started my business, I was so nervous about making the investment in the safety testing required to sell children’s products.
I had done my research, and I knew that legally, this had to happen. Ethically, it was a necessity. But psychologically, it was a hurdle! What if, after the time, resources, and cost of testing, the venture was a flop? My husband and family were incredibly supportive, so I decided to take the leap of faith. I am SO glad that I did!
6. When you get really busy how do you balance running your business and being a Mama?
When life gets crazy busy, I prioritize. As much as I love my business and as proud as I am of my products, at the end of the day, my boys are my top priority. I work in the sewing corner of our play room, so all of my business is basically done with my boys playing trucks or legos or tinker toys in the background. And I love it!! I love that I can be creative and productive while meeting the needs of my kids.
I guess I try to achieve balance by giving myself some grace when necessary. I try not to compare myself to other businesses that seem like they have it all together all of the time. Everyone has their own challenges, their own business and personal priorities, their own goals. I am happy with the pace of my business now, which allows me to continue growing and creating and selling without a great deal of pressure.
7. Where do you see your shop 1 year from now? 5 years from now?
I really just hope that I continue to make quality organic products for mamas and their babies!
One year from now, I am hoping to offer a more extensive product line, to branch out into other eco-friendly nursing and teething accessories.
Five years from now, it’s hard to imagine what Pax Organics For Baby could turn into! It’s also hard to imagine what life will be like balancing the business with three kiddos! Maybe my products could be carried in brick and mortar stores. Maybe I will sell in-person at craft shows and markets. Maybe I will employ other mamas to help sew and bead! It is certainly fun to dream.
8. What are you most proud of with your shop?
I am most proud of my products themselves. I love when I hear the little notification on my phone saying that my shop received new feedback! I know that I find my necklaces useful and beautiful, but it is always, always a blessing to me to hear that other mamas feel the same way.
I love hearing that a necklace helped a little 4 month old battle teething pain or that it was someone’s favorite baby shower gift. I feel proud of the quality of my products and the personalized customer service I provide. I love thinking about how, in my own small way, my products help loving mamas all over the country to soothe their little ones.
When a mama cares for her babies, it is a sacred thing. I am honored to be a part of it in my own little way.
