Happy Friday loves! Let’s end the week by featuring an awesome shop we think you should all know about. ❤ Have you seen the hand lettered prints for decor and custom items for every day use floating around lately? Hand lettering is the hottest thing now and with good reason! We can’t get enough of it’s quaint charm and inviting nature.
Our very first shop feature is an honor to showcase because they created our logo for us, told you we couldn’t get enough of the hand lettering! They offer custom hand lettered prints, mugs and so much more.
We did a little Q & A with the shop owner, Carley, who is an inspiring Mama and truly talented with her work. It is such a pleasure to introduce The Written Word Shop to you all!
- Tell us a little about you, your shop and what you offer.
My name is Carley. Born and raised in Utah. I’m a mama, a book lover, and an aspiring artist/entrepreneur. The Written Word Shop began offering custom order name mugs after I made a few as gifts for friends and family several years ago. I was encouraged to sell them on Etsy and they became pretty popular.
After taking a short break (getting married and having babies), I decided to reopen my shop but offer different products. My Grama is a watercolor artist and instilled a love for the beautiful textures and soft colors at a very young age. I decided to combine my love for words and writing with my love for art and offer custom and pre-made hand lettered quotes and prints. My most popular item remains to be the custom order!
2. What inspired you to open your shop?
Many things and people inspired me to open my shop: family, friends, my love and need for creativity. I took a leap of faith back in April, quit my part time job to stay home with my little guy, and decided that I needed a creative outlet and some way to make a little money. Thus the re-opening of The Written Word Shop.
3. How would you describe your shop’s style and feel?
I guess I would describe my shop’s style and feel as minimalistic and fresh. I love simple black and white prints, and I LOVE watercolor and the fresh, light, “airiness” that it provides.
4. If you could give one piece of advice to fellow mamas on starting a business, what would it be?
It’s tough, but so is being stuck in a job that not only takes you away from your family, but one you don’t love! Take that step of faith. Try something new. Even if it doesn’t take off right away, you’ll find that you are so much more fulfilled and energized by doing something you love! Oh, also work hard and keep your head up! It’s not going to happen overnight, so don’t get discouraged. Just keep on keepin’ on.
5. When you get really busy, how do you balance running your business and being a Mama?
Being a mama comes first, every time! That might mean my shop doesn’t grow as fast as others or that I’m not selling as much, but it’s something I am willing to sacrifice for the well being and happiness of my child. There’s always time to make money, but not always time to enjoy the little moments.
6. Where do you see your shop 1 year from now? 5 years from now?
I am a dreamer and I tend to think really big, which can be both beneficial and detrimental. So when I think of the future of my business, I am thinking of BIG things. Hoping that it continues to grow and that I am able to reach out and touch the hearts of more and more people with the simple beauty of words and art combined.
7. What are you most proud of with your shop?
Honestly? My customer service. If a customer ever approaches me with an issue or concern or an idea for a custom order, I will bend backwards to make sure it is resolved and/or taken care of to the best of my ability. I value my customers and I know that there are thousands of other similar shops vying for that sale. So every time they choose me and my little shop, I feel so honored and blessed!
