Colorwave Alum, George Nunez, has spent his career gaining deep technical and business expertise by building and scaling products for early stage startups across diverse sectors. Today, he’s leveraged that experience to launch ventures that empower others in his native Bronx, NY. He increases access to the tech sector by providing resources, opportunities, and education on the startup and tech ecosystem. Currently, he’s the co-founder of Bronx Tech Week and Bronx Tech Hub, which aim to transform the borough into a hub for technological innovation, propel it into the forefront of the digital age, and dismantle the digital divide.

George’s Founder Story

George Nunez has always had a passion for mission driven work — he has a deep a desire to drive meaningful impact and increase access for underserved communities. After gaining deep technical and business expertise working as an investment banking analyst and product manager at early stage startups, George shifted his focus to the non-profit sector, building products that teach and mentor kids about S.T.E.A.M. through esports and egaming. Looking to build community and grow his career in a like-minded environment, he joined Colorwave, which provided him access and education to further understand the VC-backed economy. Colorwave’s emphasis on empowering professionals of color and creating equity in the industry planted the seed for scaling this kind of impact in the Bronx, an under-resourced area where George was raised. He felt inspired to change the narrative and improve lives by providing resources, access, opportunities, and education on tech, startups, and VCs.

George’s first foray into driving change was starting and speaking at TedxBronx, which brought the Ted Talk experience to the South Bronx. The event was a success, and George wanted to build on the momentum to create an initiative that was more tech-focused and would have a direct impact on the Bronx.

In May 2023, George launched the inaugural Bronx Tech Week. It served as a transformative event, showcasing the immense potential of the Bronx as a hub for technological innovation.

The success of the event gave George a vision of what a Bronx Tech ecosystem could look like if tech resources were steadily invested into the Bronx.

Striving to build a robust and inclusive tech ecosystem, the event laid the foundation for spearheading initiatives throughout the year to empower the Bronx community and propel it into the forefront of the digital age.

In June 2023, he launched the Bronx Tech Hub with a goal of creating a vibrant tech community through partnering with key stakeholders and implementing initiatives across four pillars:

1 Education / Professional Advancement

2 Workforce Development

3 Entrepreneurship

4 Tech advocacy

Through these core pillars, the Hub will empower the residents of the Bronx, bridge the digital divide, and ensure equal access to opportunities for Bronxites in a rapidly evolving tech industry.
