Janus is Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. Janus is the Roman god that looked to the future and to the past. This symbolic crossroads is where HelloFresh and Motiv Solutions find themselves as new-found partners.
HelloFresh, the world’s leading meal kit provider, can attribute its technical capability as a major contributor to its growth and industry leadership. The engineering organization, also known as HelloTech, believes firmly in contributing to the open source community. That is why in 2017, HelloFresh Platform team developed and open-sourced an API gateway to help support their code and microservice infrastructure, called Janus. Janus has hundreds of forks, many stable releases, and has benefited from a Github community. Today, Janus is being handed off to the Motiv team.
“We are honored and excited to have Janus in our stable of solutions at Motiv” says Tim Brigham, CEO of Motiv Solutions. “It is a great fit with our brand and commitment to developing and maintaining game-changing solutions that bring new meaning to content logistics.”
Motiv Solutions is a Content Logistics company that allows businesses to control their content and software rather than have software vendors control the business, allowing for better business outcomes.
So what is an API Gateway? An API gateway sits in front of your application(s) and/or services and manages the heavy lifting of authorisation, access control and throughput limiting to your services. In theory, it should mean that you can focus on creating services instead of implementing management infrastructure. For example, if you have written a really strong web service that provides geolocation data for all the cats in NYC, and you want to make it public, integrating an API gateway is a faster, more secure route than writing your own authorisation middleware. Again, this is where Janus gets its name from; Janus is the god of the gates.
While Janus has a number of users in both the Go and microservice community, HelloFresh made the decision to migrate large service mesh infrastructure which would handle the requirements Janus was fulfilling. This is where Motiv Solutions was provided the opportunity to step in.
Motiv Solutions has its own suite of services and products that were already using Janus. Motiv Solutions loves Go, which is the language Janus is written in. In addition to already using Janus, the team at Motiv Solutions has over 20 years of experience managing open source products. Motiv Solutions is looking forward to continuing building and supporting the community around Janus. The company believes this is the most flexible API gateway available and doesn’t sacrifice ease of use, configuration and installation.
Jason Tesser, who is the Motiv Solutions CTO, said “Janus opens the door for Motiv to continue to provide our customers with stable and modern software solutions. We at Motiv are passionate about community and Janus allows us to contribute to the tech community building on the amazing work the HelloFresh engineering team started.”
For Motiv, this partnership fits within our brand strategy perfectly. As a modern software company, we know you have to engage with the open source community. This is our contribution to the development community within Content Logistics. We want to give everyone a head start. Engagements like this keep our community creative and innovative.
Brent Griffin, Chief Strategy Officer at Motiv, says, “We are thankful to HelloFresh for all of the work they have shared with the community, and we are excited for the opportunity to facilitate the continuing evolution of Janus!”
HelloFresh shares this excitement, Ilya Sakharov, Director of Platform and QA, says “HelloFresh believes in the strength and importance of the open source community. As we continue to share internally developed tools with this community, we care about each one of tools’ evolution and growth. Now, Janus is at this point of transition, after years of work and improvements in HelloTech, we are grateful to Motiv who will offer Janus a new home, where it will continue to evolve and serve the community.”
