Which of these 10 journal types is best for you?

When you first start journaling, you may find that you want to write about different things at different times. Issues you want to tackle in your journaling may not fit conveniently together, so your journal might become a bit random and unfocused.

If that’s you, you may find it more effective for you to keep more than one type of journal to keep everything more organized.

When you keep more than one type of journal, you can easily go to a specific journal to work on a specific topic or organize something so your writing can help you to make better decisions.

1. Dot Journal

This format of journal is useful for anyone who has many to-do lists, likes to work with pen and paper, and likes to keep track of goals. For this to work, your journal should have a table of contents that you create as you add entries so you can find everything again.

You will use symbols, colors, and lines to design your journal. You should be able to see at a glance what is on the page.

2. Vision Journal

If you have any interest in personal development, you will likely have heard of vision boards, and this is basically the same, except that it is a journal that helps you achieve your goals.

The most effective way to benefit from this type of journal is that you set up the journal so that you only have one goal to focus on for each page.

Then you can write words, add pictures, or draw something that will allow you to make plans to reach that goal. When you reach your goal, write in the date you reached it.

3. Line a Day Journal

Basically, this journal is what it says — you only write down one line per day. You simply write a short line in the journal about what you did that day. It should be one or two sentences at most, and they shouldn’t take up much space in your diary. Some people like to use a calendar and pen to do this.

4. Classic journal

This is simply a diary where you can write whatever you want each day. It can be long or short, or you can skip days if you want. The classic journal is exactly like the diary you may have kept as a child. You write what you want in it every day.

5. Prayer Journal

This is a special kind of journal where you imagine your journal is your higher power. Write down your prayers to your God instead of saying them. Write them down so you can remember them and look back on them.

6. Dream journal

Some people like to record their dreams because they believe that dreams give signs for life. If you want to remember and keep track of your dreams, you need to make sure you describe your dreams in your journal every morning.

It’s obviously important that you write while the dream is fresh in your mind and you still remember it. Describe the dream and then research what it means and write about that too.

7. Food diary

Write down everything you eat every day. Some people also like to write down the calorie content and so on. It can also be helpful to write down why you ate something, how it made you feel, and any similar thoughts that come to your mind.

8. Travel journal

Holidays can be wonderful experiences, and a great way to remember your travels is to keep a travel journal. Some people keep it for each trip so they can remember better. You can record your adventures and activities and what you thought of them in your journal and also attach tickets, pictures, and memories.

9. Gratitude journal

This is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a journal where you record what you are grateful for every day. You can’t put anything negative in this journal because it’s supposed to help you think more positively.

10. Project journal

This is a practical journal, especially suitable for those who regularly work on projects. Keeping a diary of each project you work on, recording actions taken, results, and data, will not only help you improve each project but also help you look back on it with enthusiasm.

Summary

If you want to keep a journal to solve a problem, keeping specific journal types for different things is an effective way to do it. It is also a good way to store your thoughts and memories for the future in an organized and useful way.

But always remember that journaling will best serve you if you do it in a way you find comfortable and practical. Using two or three journal types won’t help if you prefer to record everything in one place so you can find your journal easily.

I suggest you try different journal types and find the one that is best for you.

Not sure what to do next? How to get started journaling EASILY — just start!

I hope you enjoyed 10 journal types you can use and found it useful and interesting. Please consider leaving a comment. I’d love to hear from you!
