3 reasons labels limit our potential

Labels are lies that are holding us back from living our best life.

In order to understand and make sense of the world we put labels on everything. I guess it’s to predict what is going to happen so we can avoid the fear of uncertainty. When you see someone that has ripped clothes, messy hair, holding a bag of recycled bottles it would be easy to assume and label that person ‘homeless.’ This prepares us for our reaction to either avoid the person or engage in conversation.

Labels not only affect the way we perceive others but more importantly it is affecting our ability to be our best self. These three reasons are how labels are limiting our potential:

Labels create an attachment to our identity

We don’t just label others, we label ourselves with the identity we are trying to show the world. The labels help us connect with one another because it attracts similar people together. For example, if you identify yourself as a musician then you surround yourself with other musicians. You are connected by your common interests and experiences.

The danger to labeling ourselves comes in when we start to attach ourselves to that identity. When people enter different stages in their life such as motherhood, a career change or marriage there is a potential to lose yourself because you have…
