“If you’re not using your smile, you’re like a man with a million dollars in the bank and no checkbook.” – Les Giblin

Smile, smile, smile, and keep smiling. Smiling does well for you and others. Smiling is contagious.

Have you wondered why you smile when you see an old friend you haven’t seen for a long time? Your friend smiles back at you and you both exchange hugs and pleasantries.

Or have you wondered why people around you smile and laugh at a comedy they heard? Or why do you smile when being surprised by flowers and chocolates from your best friend?

How did you feel? You felt happy and better. But yet, some people still prefer to frown than to smile.

Here are some reasons why you should consider smiling as a priority:

Smiling boost your mood

Research shows that smiling helps to boost your mood. It can serve as a natural antidepressant. It can also change the mood of others positively because smiling is contagious.

A powerful remedy to reduce stress

Stress is a norm in today’s world. A suggestion from a study shows that during periods of stress, holding a smile on someone’s face may help the heart too. Previous studies have shown that smiling can affect emotions thus having effects on stress.

Smiling boost your immune system

Research shows that smiling can boost your immune system by reducing cortisol. It may also reduce the risk of high blood pressure by lowering blood pressure. However, more research is needed to clarify this.

There are release of neurotransmitters in your blood

When you smile, neurotransmitters like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, play positive roles. Research shows that these brain chemicals can lower anxiety, increase feelings of happiness and pleasure, and reduce physical pain. Research shows that smiling is a natural drug.

Smiling make you attractive and approachable

Imagine Mr. A and Mr. B work in the same office. Mr.A always frowns on his face. On the other hand, Mr.B always smiles and most people are drawn to him. Now you walk into the office as a client.

Knowing these two different personalities, whom will you approach more?

Your guess is as good as mine. Mr.B will be the first on my list.

Why?

Because as humans, we are naturally drawn to those who smile. It makes one attractive too. Research shows that smiling can make you look youthful and feel better.

Final thoughts

Dear you, smiling has positive effects on your general well-being. Research has shown that there are health benefits that can result when you smile.

Surround yourself with positive vibes from family and friends that will make you blush with smiles. Engage in healthy recreational activities that will boost your smiling mood.
