Self discovery through journaling case study
Julie loved her life. She had a husband who supported her needs and three children. She lived in the home that she grew up in as a child, and they were slowly renovating it.
She took an active part in events in the area she lived in and felt connected to an extensive network of friends.
But Julie was not happy with her job. She worked in the administration office of a local college. It brought good benefits and generous holiday terms that allowed her time with the children during the holidays.
Yet, Julie wished she had a more fulfilling career with the ability to set her own hours. She just didn’t know what that job could look like.
She started to journal for personal growth
When she finally expressed this thought out loud to her mother, her mother told her to start journaling every day. At first, Julie had trouble writing a diary. Then she began to describe her career misfortune. She wrote about the jobs she had had over the years and described which tasks had made her happy and which she had not enjoyed and tried to avoid.
As she wrote more, she slowly peeled back layers she was hiding from herself and realized that the wanted a career that allowed her to use her creative talents.
Having discovered this need, she began taking art classes at the university where she worked. She tried out different things and then discovered photography. Within a few weeks, Julie knew she had found the new career path she wanted to pursue: becoming a freelance photographer.
