44 Seconds of Humanism

During the worst days of Covid-19, Wolf Blitzer’s nightly tribute to the victims always brought into focus the painful reality of what was taking place. There was no discussion about statistics, how many people were hospitalized, how many people died, or which areas of the country were most affected. Instead, we learned some inner qualities about two souls who had passed on.

Wolf highlighted, with solemn grace, a few characteristics which gave us a glimpse into the lives of two people who would never again walk the earth. Some of his comments included, “He taught his family the need for selfless love and kindness for all living things.” A woman, “approached life like an adventure.” Another person, “loved politics and crossword puzzles.” Of another man Wolf said, “his daughter says he taught her the meaning of unconditional love.” These remembrances allowed us to understand why the two individuals were loved — why they would be missed.

During the final 44 seconds of his show, The Situation Room on CNN, I would stand up and move closer to the T.V. I was spellbound by each and every word, and the photos which flashed on the screen. When Wolf came to the same final sentence of each show, I wondered if he was going to choke up with emotion. It always appeared like he might.

He managed to get the words out each time. “May They Rest in Peace and May Their Memories Be A Blessing.” Once the cameras stopped rolling, I could imagine he shed some tears.
