Vasily Arkhipov whose one decision saved the world from witnessing WW-।।।. During the Cuban missile crisis, on October 27th, 1962 the US Navy destroyers and aircraft carriers discovered signs of diesel powered nuclear armed submarine named B-59 (The B-59 was a USSR Submarine) near Cuba. Being in international waters the US Navy performed tactics to bring them to the surface for proper identification. But, soon it was understood by the B-59 crew and they moved down deeper to escape from being monitored by US Navy further. Those on board were dubious of the war broke out. Later, the B-59 Captain Valentin Grigorievitch Savitsky decided to launch a nuclear torpedo in illusion the war had broken out.

Then, it required approbation of the other two high rank officers present on board to do so. The political officer Ivan Semonovich Maselennikov and the Cheif of staff Vasily Arkhipov had such authority. Arkhipov did not favor the nuclear launch decision and he called it off which lead an argument.

Eventually, Arkhipov persuaded Savitsky to surface and wait for orders from Moscow. This may have averted WW-।।। which was ensued if the nuclear weapon was fired.

On their return to Russia the officers, crew were criticized badly by their own people for not launching the missile. A press conference was held by commander Vadim Pavlovich Orlov revealing clearly that Arkhipov was the reason for not launching nuclear weapon against USA.
Lastly, I want to quote Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., advisor of John F. Kennedy who stated, “This was not only the most dangerous moment of Cold War. It was the most dangerous moment in Human history.”
