People with OCD might wonder whether how they talk to themselves while being triggered is a coping strategy or a form of ritualistic self-reassurance.
In other words, the way you respond to an intrusive thought can either improve your OCD or make it much worse.
The solution is to sit with the anxiety. Not to avoid it.
Here are 5 statements you can say to help you do that.
- I have to live with uncertainty.
- I know I’m obsessing when my thoughts start with “What if?”.
- My family and friends can’t really assure me of anything, and when they do, I don’t believe them, anyway.
- My obsessions pass when I don’t act on the fear. This one will pass too.
- Analyzing my thoughts will only make things worse.
