You can’t find contentment in the material things

Try exploring the intellectual or spiritual path

If you look for success in the material world, you may find it, but it won’t be lasting. You would have read stories about super-rich people who were part of a scam or started a scam to get richer. And you wonder why do they had to do this; they already had lots and lots of money.

Then there are business people or celebrities who say that becoming rich or famous doesn’t mean that you will be happy or content. As Jim Carrey said, “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer”

Creator’s plan

The creator’s plan gave little weightage to material possessions while the scope for spiritual fulfilment or intellectual development is unbound. If you aim to achieve contentment or think that material success leads to fulfilment, you will be disappointed. The scope for material fulfilment is limited — food, clothes, fame, married life, entertainment etc.

People have two facets of personality: physical and spiritual. The physical aspect is limited to looks, height, girth, health, muscularity, etc. The physical aspect has its limitations, and a person will end up disappointed if the physical aspect forms the centre of their lives.

Spiritual and intellectual path

On the contrary, the spiritual or intellectual aspect has no limits to it. Your mind develops intellectually and spiritually through experiences. That experience can be through reading books, attending classes, engaging in an intellectual conversation, discussion or debate. The spiritual experience can be when you visit a religious place or help someone and the emotion that comes along with it.

Scientific study or pursuit entails traversing the intellectual domain. And this path never ends. As Albert Einstein said, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.”

If you think that the material world is where contentment lies, you will be a dabbler who will acquire one possession after another but will only have fleeting contentment. If you want to have long-term contentment, walk down the spiritual and intellectual path and let the mysteries of the creator confer upon you a bigger than yourself feeling in which lies the peace and contentment.
