I was supposed to be on Easter Island right now.

A magical island located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is a lone rock surrounded by thousands of miles of water around it.

Yet, at one point in history, humans installed themselves there. Isolated from others, they built a remarkable civilization.

Their story has fascinated many scientists, researchers, and adventurers from around the world. The moai statues are renowned for being an enigma that many have tried to tackle. Spread at different points of the island, the way they were transported around still remains a mystery.

I had been looking forward to this trip for over a year: Easter for Easter. For me, visiting it has been a dream since childhood.

As a kid, one of my favorite books was “Kon Tiki” by Thor Heyerdahl. It was the story of a group of adventurers who built a log raft and sailed it from Peru all the way to the main Polynesian Islands. The aim of the expedition was to prove that it was possible to cross those long distances using simple watercraft.

Heyerdahl was a proponent of long-distance cross-ocean travel in prehistory. His theory was that the Easter Islanders came to settle this tiny rock from the east, South America. He spent a long…
