When you look at the other American cars being produced around the same time, it is clear that the Viper was definitely ahead of its time. Additionally, the first examples were put together in record time as well. Exactly two years from the start date, one of the pre-production models piloted by Carroll Shelby kicked off and kept pace for the 1991 Indianapolis 500. Later that year, Dodge provided car reviewers and media access to the car and began delivering pre-ordered cars first thing in 1992.
Though the Viper had its ups and downs throughout its 21 years of production, it was an immediate success. Engineers were constantly improving on the design and each generation of the model brought vast improvements over the last. However, a hiccup in production for the 2007 model year signaled the first sign of trouble for the model.
Regardless, production resumed for the 2008 model year. Most of the changes for this generation came in the form of mechanical improvements. Displacement grew to 8.4-liters and the new higher revving V10 now produced 600-horsepower. Backing the new power plant, a new Tremec TR6060 offered the car more reliable gearing and shifting and the Dana M44–4 rear end was upgraded with an advanced limited-slip differential that greatly improved traction. Physically, not much changed for the Viper between 2006 and 2008. Although, the addition of a dramatically vented hood distinguished the two generations.
