Not many other car models have progressed the way that Pontiac’s Grand Prix model did. It was a muscle car, a solid commuter car, a family car, and a race car, a sort of jack of all trades at one point or another.

Coming out of the 1970s and into the 1980s, the Grand Prix model experienced a major downsizing that would change the course of the model from there on out. Standard V8s and optional big blocks were a thing of the past, as were oversized personal luxury body styles and muscle car design cues. For the next eight years the Grand Prix stepped further and further away from its origins.

Pontiac however, turned its interest back towards the racetrack in 1986. The goal was to create an aerodynamic Grand Prix option designed specifically for NASCAR competition. An aerodynamic nose, a bubble glass, and a fiberglass trunk lid with an integrated spoiler were among the most obvious changes and under the hood was a 305-cid V8 engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a 3.08:1 gear ratio. A sporty silver and gray two-tone finish denoted the special model along with Rally II wheels and a red striping and decal package that read 2+2.

In all, a total of 1,118 Grand Prix 2+2 examples were made in 1986 and the special package was discontinued for the 1987 model year. 1988 marked a new generation for the Grand Prix using a whole new platform that centered around a unibody construction, front-wheel-drive, and a 6-cylinder engine essentially ensuring that no more Grand Prix 2+2s would ever be made again. Vicari Auctions is offering enthusiasts the chance to bid on this well kept 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2. The car’s finish appears clear and the interior looks to be clean. This is an awesome opportunity to add a piece of Pontiac Grand Prix history to your collection.
