Everybody remembers racing slot cars as a kid. A simple concept that produced endless hours of fun and competition. The kids of today probably won’t know the joy of the miniature races, but one company is making sure that adults never forget the good times spent duking it out on the track.

Slot Mods is a small Michigan-based company. Their site tagline reads, “The builders of the world’s finest wooden slot car raceways.” A very bold claim, but after viewing some of their work, a claim that is undeniable. Slot Mods creates giant custom slot car tracks.

They have replicated iconic raceways like Le Mans, Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach in slot-car form but don’t always stick to the script. They will also build clients the fantasy track of their dreams, which includes everything down to the most minute details. They are able to capture the spirit of legendary races by including the buildings, structures, signage, trees, foliage and even the correct texture of the road. Period-correct cars speed around the track in front of miniaturized race fans. They are truly functional works of art when it comes down to it.

These 1/32-scale playable exhibits come with a serious price tag though. The base model that the company produces starts at $25,000 and custom mega-tracks can range anywhere from $75,000 to $350,000 depending on design requests.

Who is spending this kind of money on such an extravagant toy? Well some pretty high-profile clients have commissioned tracks from Slot Mods, including Jay Leno, Audi and Formula 1. Purchasing a track also comes with the promise of free service if there is ever a problem with the track.

At the end of the day, these really aren’t toys at all; they are massive, playable replicas of some of the most historic racing venues of all-time and frankly, we’re in awe of them.
