Is F1 double points about the money?
Will the last race cost more to hold?
Nothing is ever simple with Formula One. Supposedly the pinnacle of our sport, at the forefront of technology, has to resort to cheap tricks to improve the spectacle.
Double points for the final race? Why would a healthy, competitive formula that represents the best of what racing can be need to juice the interest of TV audiences by trying to orchestrate a last race battle for the championship? Are the key stakeholders really *that* worried about the state of the sport, with all of the new technology changes for 2014, that they must resort to a pathetic sleight of hand?
Besides the ridiculousness of stage managing an artificial battle to the end of the season, I’m intrigued by the possibility of the “double points finale” as a bargaining chip. If the prospect that the championship will be decided at the final race is a much more certain bet, will the hosts of that race have to pay more?
Is this what it’s come down to, hosts having the option to pay to be the backdrop to the skewing of the sport beyond all recognition?
Fuck it, let’s just make Australia a 20x Points Race and have done.
