“Please come as soon as you can”

An ‘invitation letter’ from a husband to his wife (1917), from the District Archive of Viseu

Up until 1940, the Portuguese who wished to acquire government permission to emigrate needed to present a letter by someone already living in the country of destination that would be available to welcome them.

In this letter, the husband, emigrated in Rio de Janeiro, instructs his wife on coming to Brazil “as soon as she can” bringing their son, Francisco. He advises her on what to do with their belongings in Portugal and sends some money for the trip. He also refers, briefly, to his ‘difficult’ life in the new country.
